Vera Atkins – SOE War Heroine lived in Winchelsea

Vera Atkins was a Romanian Jew who joined SOE during the Second World War and played a key role in dispatching British agents into Occupied France. At the end of the war she led the hunt for missing agents who had disappeared into Nazi concentration camps and in tracking down war criminals.

But what is amazing is that this remarkable woman lived peacefully in her aunts house in Winchelsea for many years without telling anyone her story until she died in a nursing home in Hastings on 24 June 2000, aged 92.
