A great picture of our bee hives behind the pictorial meadow that we planted last year. Tom took this picture yesterday while he was repairing the garden paths. Honey harvets at Strand House

August is here and that means the honey harvest! The bees have done really well despite the bad weather and we were able to take 3 ‘supers’ off the hive which means that we might get 50 lb of honey. The hive had grown into a skyscraper with two brood boxes and 4 supers 🙂

Wildflower garden for the summer

Last year we planted an annual wildflower meadow along the side of Rye Bay Cottage and it was a huge success with all the bees and other insects. Bee Friendly Zone

How great would it be if you could set up your own bee friendly zone. How about making Winchelsea a bee friendly zone, as it is already partly surrounded by organically farmed land and is full of wonderful gardens with flowers. see: http://www.biobees.com/beefriendlyzone/index.php

Honey Harvest started

We have taken the first two ‘supers’ off the Strand House hive and sent them away to get the honey extracted. Looking forward to our own honey in a few days time. Capturing a swarm of bees!

Our hive of honey bees has been hard at work since early Spring and we have given them some more room to expand by adding a ‘super’ to the National hive.
